Apple Picking

We had a PD Day here today so I had the pleasure of taking the kids apple picking.

The last few weeks have been fuller than usual with work for me so I was extra excited for a full day of fun with the kids. This year, when we got to the apple trees, the kids were so much more excited to pick apples so I didn’t need to help them or encourage them, they just ran from tree to tree grabbing apples and filling their bags. I just watched and of course took pictures.

We strolled around Zeckveld’s after we were done apple picking to visit with the chickens and pony and then headed to Global Donuts for lunch. I love Global Donuts sandwiches, it feels like a lunch my grandmother would lovingly make me, it fills my belly and my heart. The kids were exceptionally good at lunch and ate all their food, a lovely group of older men sitting next to us complimented us on our behaviour and I was definitely feeling proud.

We headed home to my brother in laws house and worked together to make apple pies with the fruits of our labour. The kids helped make the dough for the crust and then went off to play while I cut and peeled apples. I was tempted to turn on some music or a podcast but I just hung out with my thoughts. I realized, I really love homemaking. I really love days filled with fun family activities and time preparing food for others. The kitchen renovation continues at our house and I feel grateful that we are able to make the space more functional and beautiful but I wouldn’t be fully honest if I didn’t share, at this point we are all getting a little worn out. I am just really looking forward to having my kitchen back, a space where I can create meals and feed the people I love, this fills me up in the best way.

PS My apple pie recipe is from one of my favourite children’s books “How To See The World And Make An Apple Pie” you can shop it here.
