The Duchess on Netflix

Written by and starring Katherine Ryan

The fashion is dramatic, intelligent and sarcastic just like Katherine.

The storylines are different, challenging my thoughts on how a family can be formed.

In the first few episodes I loved Katherine’s parenting style so much so I wondered if it was too perfect. Then I was happy to see the faults of both Katherine and Olive played out in a scene where Katherine had to meet with Olive’s headmaster. Their family is imperfect, beautiful and filled with love no matter how different they look from the “regular” family.

Don’t try to watch this show while scrolling Instagram, you will miss a lot. I have had the pleasure of knowing Katherine since I was a kid and her intelligence and wit has always moved at the speed of light often leaving the brunt of her jokes with whip lash, not even knowing what happened. For this reason, I always tried to stay on her good side, yes she frightens me a little but I admire her intelligence!

The other quick component to the show is the banter that moves back and forth between Katherine and her ex. Their insults and display of hate for each other left me laughing or with my jaw on the ground. On the other side of that, they love their daughter and their ability to put her above their extreme hate for each other, makes me admire both parents. I don’t like a broken family but I love parents who put their children first.

Yes the show has vulgar content and language but it was highly entertaining on many levels for Tyler and I to watch together, which rarely happens. It also provoked my thoughts on many of the social norms pressed on women and families. It is a unique show like nothing I have ever watched and I will be eagerly waiting for more episodes to be released.

Watch it!
